Simple Acts of Kindness--for family too???

Apr 24 '00

I have been much impressed by the many stories I have read regarding how some people have made it their mission to spread love through looking for simple acts of kindness to do for others. Examples have been...if someone is short a dollar or two at the market, pay it for them, and then say, "Someone helped me out in the past. Don't pay me back. Do it for someone else!" Or while going through the toll booths, pay for the car in back of you (and hope you have an honest toll booth person!)...or putting money in a parking meter that is about to expire, and then put an unsigned note on a car explaining what you did and asking the person to do the same for someone else. Help an elderly person unload groceries.

It can be taking a youth group out in a van on a fall day to find some elderly people raking leaves, and all jump out, rakes in hand, and finish the job for them. WARNING: Our youth group went to a mall to help elderly folks carry packages, and caused quite a stir because the folks thought they were going to be robbed! So pick your acts of kindness ahead of time and be sure they will be appreciated! LOL.

One of the best stories I remember was about a young football patient with cancer who did not want his teammates to visit him in the hospital because he had lost all his hair through chemotherapy. This was during the time when long hair was in! A picture caught it all. A roomfull of jersey-clad football players beaming and smiling around their friend, EVERYONE OF THEM WITH A BALD HEAD!

It occurred to me that sometimes we are the LEAST KIND and LEAST CONSIDERATE to those in our own household. Maybe we should go the extra mile with them too, and see if it spreads kindness and love in the home like it does in the world. "I knew you were in a hurry this morning, sis, so I made your bed for you." Mom, would you like a cup of coffee? Naturally, our kids need to know responsibility and they should still be accountable for their chores and duties, but a once in a while reprieve in a stressful situation would be nice, and might inspire them to do the same.

I would be interested in hearing stories from other people regarding simple acts of kindness. Who did what for you and how did it impress you? How did you continue the kindness to others? Please rate my opinion and share your stories. Leave some comments!

The point is to LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES to help others. Sometimes a very small gesture can change a community, because the kindness fever spreads.
