HomeKids & FamilyBreast PumpsShould I Breastfeed my Child?

That's what God gave us these things for.

I bottle fed my first two kids because I just was not comfortable with the idea of breastfeeding. My mother had breastfed all of her children and did her best to encourage me to do the same, but I just couldn't bring myself to try it.
Then after I married my husband, I got pregnant again. This time I had lots of people around me giving me encouragement to at least try it and if I didn't like it, I could stop breastfeeding and just bottlefeed from there on out. My three sister-in-law's were the ones who convinced me to try it.
I read all sorts of books on the subject and also went to a breastfeeding class to get the answers to some questions that had been bothering me....such as what about the drugs that I was going to be taking since I was having an epidural and a planned c-section. They assured me that the drugs wouldn't have any negative effect on the baby. They also said that there would be a lactation specialist at the hospital who would assist me in getting started as soon after my delivery as possible.
Well, they were right about that but there were complications with my son after he was born and he had to be moved to another hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where he stayed for almost two weeks. After being released from the hospital where I had been, I went directly to the other hospital to be near my newborn son. There, we finally got to try breastfeeding when he was four days old. It didn't go very well at first, but finally he caught on and it was wonderful.
I breastfed him until he was eight months old and his sister was in the hospital with pneumonia. I had to be with her almost twenty four hours a day for a few days and went ahead and weaned him then.
I wouldn't give anything for the closeness that we shared and the bonding that went on while my son was nursing. I now wish that I had tried it with my first two kids. I definitely would tell any expecting mother who is not sure if she wants to try breastfeeding or not to at least try it...even if just for a short time. You never know how it will go if you don't try. You won't be sorry that you did.
