HomeKids & FamilyLocks & GuardsShould I Circumcise my Child?

When you're right you're right!

The American Pediatric Board has been going back and forth as to the benefits and risks of circumcision for years and years. I have three sons, none of whom are circumcised. My husband and I adopted our first son as a newborn from Mexico. He was placed in my arms when he was 3 days old. At that time he was not circumcised. We were so busy with the international adoption paperwork and the immigration process, the last thing we were thinking about was having him circumcised.

After we brought him home and took him to our pediatrician we asked the doctor about having our son circumcised. She advised at that time (March of 1987) that the American Pediatric Board had just come out with a study stating that there was no medical reason to circumcise. She further went on to say, that the "only" reason she could think of in favor of circumcision was so that my son could "look like" his dad.

Well, my son is Hispanic and my husband is of eastern European decent. How a little snip was going to make my son "look like" my husband was beyond me. Needless to say, we decided not to circumcise our son. We've adopted two other sons since then, neither of which has been circumcised. All the boys "look alike".

It may sound like a crazy comparison, but many years ago when I adopted a cat I had her declawed. I wanted her declawed for my convenience. The cat was an "inside" cat and I did not want her ruining my furniture with her claws. When I brought her home from the Vet, she was still crying from the experience. From what I could tell, her paws hurt for about a week after the surgery. I personally felt guilty for putting her through that experience.

Thinking about my cat, how could I put any of my sons through an "elective" surgery procedure? A friend of mine adopted a baby from Mexico about a year after we did. She and her husband brought their son to a pediatrician when he was 3 days old. It was very important to them that the baby be circumcised. She held her son still while the procedure was being done. My friend told me how the baby screamed the entire time and if she had to do it over again, she wouldn't do it!
