How can something so wonderful make me feel so sick?

Mar 31 '00

After trying for several years, my husband and I found out I was pregnant. We were ecstatic, although it was hard to be celebratory due to the fact that I felt so nauseous. Little did I know what lie ahead.

A week or so after the good news (which came early, as I was undergoing the first stages of infertility treatment), I went from feeling nauseous to vomiting. Absolutely everything I tried -- crackers, ginger ale, water -- wouldn't stay down. I became weak, and lost weight. I had to leave my job. After only a couple weeks of this, my doctor hospitalized me to get the nausea under control, and to hydrate my body.

I was in the hospital for five days attached to an IV, and when I was released I felt a bit better, but still felt nauseated. Around the clock I felt this way, and very little brought relief. For a couple days I could eat Cheez-its, but the soon the vomiting began, and I was starting to become depressed. We had waited so long for this news, and here I was, sicker than I'd ever been.

I was hospitalized four times in all, with no different treatment other than being rehydrated and "giving my stomach a rest". Everyone told me that it soon would be gone, but I was past my three month mark, still losing weight, still vomiting.

During my fourth hospital stay, I was very depressed and was starting to resent what was happening to my body. One day a nurse that I hadn't seen before popped in, and soon was sharing her problem with morning sickness (hyperemesis). Her doctor had prescribed Phenergan, a drug used for allergies but one that also controlled nausea and vomiting. It worked wonders for her, she said, and recommended that I ask my doctor about it.

When my doctor came in for his daily visit, I mentioned Phenergan to him, and he looked at me as if he were thinking "Why didn't I think of that?". He explained how the drug was used, and that while it was considered safe for the fetus there were no absolutes. He recommended it however, as my health had deteriorated, and something more drastic needed to occur. He gave me a prescription (suppositories), and I was released the next day.

For the rest of my pregnancy I never vomited again. The nausea was still present, although not nearly as severely as it had been. I could eat! I could walk around, go outside, act normal! I stopped talking the Phenergan around the 5 month mark, and gave birth to a healthy boy on his due date.

I had two subsequent pregnancies and asked for Phenergan from the start. I had a new doctor, and she had seen tremendous results from Phenergan. While I had little or no vomiting, I had some nausea, but it didn't affect my eating habits or my health. More importantly, it had no effects on the fetuses I was carrying -- all of my children are healthy.

I'm not a doctor, nor am I giving medical advice. I'm simply sharing what happened in my case, and what solved the problem. I'm not one to take medication at the first sign of discomfort. My morning sickness was severe, and as a result I took this medication on the advice of my doctors.
