On The First Day Of Christmas My True Love Gave To Me 5 Things I Hold Dear To Me
Dec 26 '00
It’s that time of year again. It’s time for families to get together and be thankful for what we have. It’s that time for us to give thanks to all of our loved ones. Hanging our stocking on the chimney with care, in hopes that Saint Nicholas will soon be there (I had to put in part of my favorite Christmas book). Rushing around to buy that perfect last minute gift, stopping to listen to the Christmas carolers on the street. Most of all Christmas is the time to celebrate the birth of Christ.
The first thing I hold dear to me on Christmas is knowing this time of the year everyone wants to help all those in need. I think we shouldn’t use a holiday to help those in need, but we should help them throughout the whole year. It’s something about the holidays that brings out the best in everyone.
Every year I donate a few bags of cat and dog food to my local animal shelter. I also give a toy donation to the Marine Corps for the Toy-A-Thon that’s held every year by a local radio station and Marine Corps. With both of these things I know I’ve helped an animal get a good meal and a child’s Christmas merrier. Once my daughter gets older I want to start bringing her along with me so she can know how it is to help those in need and feel that special love in her heart when she knows she helped someone else’s Christmas become brighter.
The second thing I hold dear to me on Christmas is the joy in little kids eyes when they wake up Christmas morning and see gifts under the tree. The look on their faces and the twinkle in their eyes is enough to make anyone’s Christmas bright.
Last year my daughter was only 6 weeks old on Christmas so I didn’t get to see the joy in her eyes on Christmas morning. This Christmas she is 14 months old so I did get to experience the joy and twinkle in her eyes when she woke to see gifts under the tree. Every time Jordan opened a new gift she would play with it for a few minutes until we took it away and she opened another gift. Her eyes would light up with each new gift and she would squeal in delight. When Jordan gets older I hope she will look forward to Christmas morning and seeing the joy in all the little faces on Christmas morning.
The third thing I hold dear to me on Christmas is being with family. Christmas time is about the only time of year most of my husband’s family and my family get to see each other, even though not together. We have Christmas over at our own home with my side of the family. Afterwards we go to his side and celebrate with them.
It’s wonderful seeing people you only see a few times of the year for the holidays and hearing what their up to in life. It’s nice being able to give someone something they’ve been wanting and seeing their face when they open it and can’t wait to get it home and use it. I hope when my daughter gets older she will enjoy the times when the whole family is together and enjoy the happiness it brings everyone.
The fourth thing I hold dear to me on Christmas is decorating for Christmas and baking cookies. When I was younger my sister and I helped my mom decorate the sugar cookies. Even though we probably ate more of the frosting then we put on the cookies it was always a wonderful time spending the day together and making cookies. I can’t wait until my daughter can share the joy of decorating sugar cookies with me and do the same with her own kids one day.
Decorating the Christmas tree, strings up the lights outside, hanging our stocking and decorating the whole house for Christmas was always wonderful and it made everyone get in the spirit of the holidays. I’m looking forward to the day my husband can afford a house of our own and we can decorate the outside as well as the inside however we want and share the decorating with our daughter.
The fifth thing I hold dear to me on Christmas is traditions. Every year since my husband and I’ve been together I buy him an ornament with the year on it so we can remember another wonderful Christmas together. When our daughter was born we started the same thing. We buy her a Baby’s 1st Christmas and this year Baby’s 2nd Christmas ornament. When they run out of Baby’s Christmas ornaments we will find her an ornament with the date on it. Once she is grown up and married we will give her the ornaments as keepsake gift.
Last year we started another tradition after Jordan was born. We sit together on Christmas Eve and read a Christmas book “Twas the night before Christmas”. I’m hoping when Jordan has her own family she will make new traditions of her own to make the holidays that much more special.
Whatever you hold dear on Christmas always remember the true meaning of what Christmas is and it doesn’t matter how many gifts you have under the tree. It’s the time with your loved ones that should make it the Merriest Christmas for everyone.
