False positives and false negatives

Pregnancy test are 99% accurate if done in the right way, but it doesn't always mean you are pregnant if you get a positive. It also doesn't mean that you are not pregnant if you get a negative. Confused?

Pregnancy test can show a positive as early as 10 to 12 days after conception. Your urine specimen should be a first morning specimen. This means the first time you go to the bathroom when you get up. If you are a night worker this would probably be the first afternoon specimen. This urine is more concentrated and the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin better know as hcg is in a more concentrate state. Let's say you decide you want to find out if you are pregnant after a get together with your girl friends and it is early afternoon. You have been drinking a lot of water or maybe some soda or a few cups of coffee. Off you go to the drug store and purchase a pregnancy test. It comes up negative but later on you find out you are really pregnant. Your urine was to dilute when you tested it.

False positives can happen if you have other medical problems. If you have a hydatid mole it will show a positive test. A hydatid mole is a small tumor that can grow in your uterus. They are usually benign but can fool the uterus into thinking it is pregnant. Also if you are taking any medications that contain mouse monoclonal antibodies it might be positive.

This doesn't really pertain to false or positive results but is an interesting bit of information. Men who have testicular cancer will show positive on a pregnancy test.

Most false results are just from the test being done too early or not the right concentrate of urine.
