WHERE'S THE MILK??
Jul 09 '00
Three years ago when my older daughter had her son at a large hospital, it ended up being a c-section after about 30 hours of hard labor. She wanted to nurse her baby, so got many instructions from lactate nurses on how to do it right.... It was 5 days before she could leave the hospital. Her son still did not want to nurse, but they assured her that it would soon work! But it didn't. She had a number to call if she should have any problems. She called and right away they sent out 2 lactate nurses to help her. (The nurses were very nice but also very determined that Sam would nurse).
My daughter did more breast pumping and feeding with a bottle than nursing. For two weeks the nurses came every other day. After two weeks my daughter told the nurses that she and her husband had decided that nursing was not going to work and that they had decided to bottle feed their son. The nurses did not like to hear this but had to let the parents make the decision.
My daughter felt like a failure. I informed her that she and her husband were both bottle feed babies and that they both turned out just fine. It was the best decision that she could have made. Their son (my grandchild) is a very good eater - has been all of his three years of life and his doctor states that he is very healthy.
Peer pressure can be hurtful at a time like this. A new mother with nurses telling her to keep trying and friends and relatives telling her it is in the best interest of her son..... In this case it was not.
