What's wrong with a little comfort?

May 26 '00

What's wrong with a little comfort? This is what I kept asking myself when I realized how attached my 5 month old was becoming to her pacifier and her security blanket. After a week of getting up in the night having to stick her pacifier back in her mouth every time she popped it out, I decided it was time to take it away. Let me just say, this resulted in a very unhappy baby and Mommy!

After a few days of listening to her cry and having to rock her to comfort her, I realized that there is nothing wrong with her needing these items. If I took them away, it just meant she would find new ones (i.e. Mommy rocking her or sucking on her thumb, which she was beginning to find). So, I gave her back her pacifier.

What a happy baby we had again. When she starts getting sleepy, I give her her pacifier and her little security blanket. She holds her little blanket right by her face and sucks away on her pacifier --- right into dreamland.

I am a little worried as to how we are going to break her habit later. I do not want a 3 year old running around with a pacifier hanging out of her mouth. For now, she needs this and I want her to be happy. I really believe some babies need comfort items and some don't.
