Having four children at home, I have tried it all for one reason or another.
My first two, I didn't like using the cloth diapers because of the pins. I had a fear that I would poke them, and the plastic pants. Pulling them off made such a big mess. I didn't like the idea of me having to rinse the soiled ones and wringing them out either. This was in 1984 and 1987.
With my third child, I discovered, cloth diapers with velcro! Soon to follow, finding covers with velcro. I thought, "Wow, they are almost as easy as disposables". This was 1998.
My third child spent his first months in disposables before I made the switch. He seemed to love them. I felt like such a good mommy putting my baby in something soft and flannel instead of paper or plastic that disposables. And the only time that he got rashes, was when I put him in disposables, so he was only cloth diapered from his 2nd month until he was almost a year old. I loved not having to run to the store for diapers!
Then I got lazy and slowly switched back.
On August 22nd my daughter was born. I had prepared to cloth diaper her from birth. I bought newborn diaper covers, and started making my own from the softest flannel walmart carried and the best elastic.
She was 6 lbs. 8 oz. at birth. The newborn covers were too big. They rubbed on her embilical cord. So, I put her in disposables.
She stayed in disposables for a few weeks before putting her into cloth. I love the idea of cloth, but my son is still in diapers also. It is alot of work to have two in cloth at the same time.
I have low iron causing less energy, so, they both went to disposables once again.
PROS

-never having to run to the store for diapers
-softness against your childs' softest areas
-less garbage in the landfill (and your garbage can)
Disposables
-quick and easy to change
-no washing
CONS
Cloth
-more laundry
-having a pail of wet and soiled diapers until washtime
-large initial costs
Disposables
-putting chemicals against your childs skin (added for absorbancy)
-having to buy diapers all the time
-more garbage
I have tried each, and personally, I love cloth!! I plan to use it again.
