Calling all Dragons and Knights!!
May 25 '00
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! All of you who are interested in a fun birthday party idea...have I got a tried and tested one for you. My son turned five this last weekend and wanted to have a dragon and knight birthday party. I searched the local party stores and did not find anything for his theme. I ordered everything needed from Birthday Express.com. (I already wrote an epinion on that experience--they were great!)
After I received the box with all of the goodies for the party I looked through the party planner provided by Birthday Express. I was not real impressed with activity suggestions and so I made up my own. Here is what we did.
I had the twelve children divided into three groups of four. I gave each one of them a nametag with a colored dot. We had a blue group, a red group and a yellow group. When making their nametags, I wrote their names as "Sir Zachary" or "Lady Jessica" (fill in the appropriate names). I also made nametags for the helper parents that I had assigned a job to. Their nametags were written as "Queen Dana" and "King Mark" (filling in their appropriate names).
I had set up three tables in my backyard. I had a parent assigned to each of the tables. The kids went to each center for about 15 minutes. I gave each parent a tub that included everything they would need for their project plus an additional activity like a coloring sheet if they needed something extra.
Here are the centers that we did:
Center 1 : Dragon Puppets
We used a green paper bag (from a craft store), the kids attached eyes, nose, red "fire", spikes for the back, and dragon scales (sequins).
Center 2 : Crowns
I found crowns at a local party store. I gave each of the kids some sequins and had them decorate the crowns with jewels.
Center 3 : Shields
I cut out shield shapes from silver/gold tagboard. I had various things for them to decorate their shield with. I went to the local teacher's supply store and found dragon shapes and small crown shapes. I also had large sequins and star stickers.
The centers worked out really well. When they were finished with centers we had a small snack and then did the presents. After presents we did a dragon pinata. We had cake (I used the Wilton cake pan that is shaped like a castle) and icecream and then the kids were picked up. It was a two hour party and it went very smoothly. Many parents commented on how organized and in control all of the five year olds were. Everyone had a great time--myself included!!
