What a great review! You did a wonderful job and we appreciate it so much. I'm glad that you have had the opportunity to be touched by the "power of a wish."
Melinda (Sacramento Chapter of Make-A-Wish)

A Child Can Wish Upon A Star
I once knew a sweet, spirited boy, we'll call him Tom to respect his family's privacy. Tom was a remarkable boy that I had first met in church. He was also in my daughter's first grade class. He was a little boy that loved life and enjoyed living it to the fullest! Until life was suddenly taken from him. Tom suffered from Childhood Leukemia. He had been treated and had gone into remission, but the remission didn't last long. He soon passed to the other side of the veil, to wait to be joined by his beloved family with the passing of time.

Tom had a very special wish that a wonderful organization granted him. He always had wanted to go deep sea fishing and catch a big Marlin. This very special organization that bestowed this gift was Make A Wish Foundation. Somehow though, I think a Heavenly spirit had something to do with the final outcome of this very special wish of his.

Tom was joined by his father for this remarkable trip. They had been blessed with beautiful weather for the entire trip. What was so remarkable about this trip? Young Tom caught a big Marlin! This isn't something that happens often with the most experienced fisherman. When he returned home from his wish trip, a news person from a local stationed interview him. Little Tom had a grin from one end of his face to the other. The news person asked what he had done with his fish. He smiled, pointed down, and said, "I'm sitting on it!" Underneath him was a big ice chest.

What is this wonderful organization that gives children with life threatening illnesses these special wishes? Make-A-Wish Foundation. Their website is located at http://www.wish.org/.

Make-A-Wish Foundation has been giving children wishes since 1980 when they were first founded in Phoenix, Arizona. Make-A-Wish has NEVER turned down a qualified child. A qualified child is a child that is under 18 years of age with a life-threatening illness. Make-A-Wish is made aware of a child's special wish through referrals from parents or guardians and through medical professionals. Referrals can also come from wish children themselves. They don't accept other referrals, for example from friends, out of respect to a families privacy. "When you refer a child for a wish, you give an experience that lasts an entire life. You give hope, inspiration and the power to keep fighting a very grown-up battle." Make A Wish Foundation If you are a parent of a child with a life threatening illness, you can refer a child right from their website.! If you find it in your heart to help some of these children to have a wish of their own, you can donate right from the website.

Get involved with Make-A-Wish! There are so many ways to get involved! You can make a cash donations or you can donate air miles and hotel & loyalty points. Make-A-Wish Foundation was able to grant more than 5,800 travel wishes last year, so by donating these miles and points, you to can make a wish come true. You can also get involved by volunteering. Just a few suggestions of ways that volunteers help are, wish granting, fund raising, special events, marketing, public relations, advertising, medical outreach, web site design and general administration.

Be sure to visit the Make-A-Wish website and meet some of the remarkable children and their wishes that had been fulfilled by Make-A-Wish. Some of the wishes would amaze you! One child wanted to be the Chairman of Nintendo, another child who battled cancer most of her life wanted to honor her family who had given her love, support, and encouragement. These children and their stories will touch your heart for a very long time to come.

Make-A-Wish first came into being because of a special boy Chris. Chris's wish was to be a police officer. Through much difficulty and determination, a group of people made his wish come true. After Chris's wish they saw how the pain and anguish had been replaced with smiles and laughter! Very soon the idea of Make-A-Wish was born allowing thousands of children to have that one special wish.

A special note I would like you to be aware of is all the chain letters that you see on the internet. Make-A-Wish NEVER supports chain letters. If you do receive one, reply back and quote, " Make-A-Wish Foundation does not participate in these kinds of wishes." Then politely refer the sender to the Make-A-Wish page. These requests are not legitimate!

This year, the year 2000, will mark Make-A-Wish's 20th birthday. During this year Make-A-Wish Foundation will grant its 80,000th wish. Thank you Make-A-Wish for allowing my little friend Tom to fulfill his dream of catching that big Marlin, before he passed away.
