What will I do for my child's 1st
Jul 12 '00
There is not much to plan for a child's first birthday because they are really too small to understand what is going on.
My child will be turning 1 in August and I have already planned the menu as there will be many more adults than 1 year olds attending this memorable event.
Being that this is my third child I am not at all unfamiliar with birthday parties for this young age group.
I've made it the most fun I can in the past with the cake and ice cream, pizza, luncheon meat tray, potato, macaroni and pasta salads as well as assorted chips and dips. Of course I cannot forget all babies like the cheesy puffs.
I've always decorated with store bought "I'm 1" decorations whether it be streamers, balloons or those flags. But I cannot forget to purchase the large "1 year old" plastic bib for my child because there is no fun at a birthday party of a 1 year old if you're not prepared to offer your child that first piece of cake. Chocolate is always best! Be prepared for a mess but it really is enjoyable in years to come when you are looking back at those pictures and laugh at the memories.
Don't FORGET to take lots and lots of pictures because this only happens once and we know the child will grow way too fast. I've always been a little saddened at my children's first birthday parties because it is then I realize they are becoming little people and are no longer "Momma's baby" and after that age you can forget about holding them because they wanna walk and get away from you as much as possible.
The party can be simple whether you offer spaghetti to your baby for a real mess or something simple as a pizza I guarantee my daughter will enjoy looking back at the big deal Mom and Dad made out of her turning "1".
Oh and don't forget to save some of the memories in a shoebox or something. I've saved the plastic decorations from my daughters cake, her birthday cards from everyone, a cake napkin and some of the decorations just to pull out one day when she is married and has children of her own she will know Mom made a bid deal out of her first birthday because I know, turning "1" is a big deal maybe not as much to the child but it sure is to the parents.
