Food For Thought - Formula By Prescription Only?
Oct 26 '00
I came across a review by jennmueller tonight. In her opinion, she feels that formula should be given only by prescription. I started to leave a comment, but since it got so long winded I felt that it needed to be posted as a review instead.
I wonder ...
How many mothers do you think would start their infants on cows milk far too early if forced to breastfeed against their will? I'm afraid that some may be forced to take drastic measures, especially if they could not afford the additional cost of having to go through a doctor for this? It is a well known fact that cows milk is not a healthy alternative for babies.
I'm curious what that would do to the price if formula became available only by prescription. It is well known that the cost of prescriptions is rising rapidly and has been for quite some time. Many medical products are available by prescription as well as over the counter and even though the products are very similar the cost is often much higher for the prescription product.
If we allowed the loss of this freedom of choice, what would be next? If it were law that we must breastfeed our infants, would we next be mandated to feed our growing children only particular foods without a prescription also? Would we be able to decide for ourselves as adults or would we need a prescription to obtain a Big Mac?
Would you really want to give up your basic right to decide what is right for yourself and your family? We all make choices every day and perhaps they are not always the best or healthiest choices, but they are our choices to make.
Freedom of choice includes the right to run out to the local hamburger joint if you choose to, even if it isn't the most healthy thing to eat. It also includes the right to drink a soda, or to eat a candy bar if we choose. I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to relinquish my rights and give total control of everything I do to the government. We have lost to much freedom in this free country as it is, why would anyone willingly give up what freedom we have left?
