Yep....these little harmless looking creatures can be dangerous to your mental, physical, and financial health!
It happens suddenly, and without warning. My advice - don't buy the first one and you should be ok.
This is my story:
I was sitting in the 'drive-thru' line at McDonald's, wondering what all
chaos was about inside. I asked the person who took my money what it was all about. She said, "Teenie Beanies". I had heard of the beanie craze, but had never witnessed it for myself. I pulled over in the parking lot, and watched for a minute while I ate my hamburger.
I decided to go speak to someone I saw inside, and became involved in the frenzied chatter about these beanies. I found out that these stuffed animals are worth alot of money! I decided to buy one, but then I wanted another. After that I decided I just needed the entire set.
That is when it started. Little did I know that #1 and #2 of the set were no longer available! What?? Not available??
Then someone said that the McDonald's across town had them, but I better hurry. So off I flew!
While on the way back home, I saw someone selling beanies on the side of the road. What timing! I stopped to check them out, and this woman had all of the 'moms' and 'dads' of the Teenies!
I could have matching sets!! Cool!
I rushed home to tell my husband about my exciting afternoon!
He thought I was silly, and just said, "Don't spend too much money on those things".
I went to 6 different McDonald's the next day searching for the next "Teenie" in the set. I did this for the next week till I finally was able to purchase the entire set. It was work, but fun too.
Before the "Teenie Beenie" promo ended at McDonald's, I was addicted to the chase, out of money, and sick of hamburgers! We even had hamburgers in the freezer!
The adrenalin rush stayed with me though. I would get up early to be at stores when they opened, I would stand in lines for drawings to try to win beanies, and I would spend hours trading online for beanies I wanted.
After months of spending all my extra money on these hard to find collectibles, I finally stopped. I realized this was never going to end.
Every time I had finally gotten the prized beanie, there was another to get, then another, and it never ended. I had to stop the cycle.
It was tough, but I haven't bought a beanie baby in 6 months.
Now I have a room full of 400 beanies that I am selling. I hate to see them go, but I hate to hang on to them as well. It was fun while it lasted, but I just can't keep chasing beanies that I will never find.
Beware, because if you buy your first one you will probably become addicted, just as I did.
Stay away from them if you know what is good for you! <smile>
