Large or Small --There Are Joys and Woes

Sep 27 '00

Whether you have a large family or small family, there are joys and there are woes. Life is never easy and is never happy all of the time. But, it is what you make of life that counts. How you handle each particular situation and what you have learned is what is truly important.

Large families are great for handing down clothes from one to the next child as long as the clothing is in good shape. Also, holidays are wonderful with big families! There is always so much food, drink, happiness, hubbub! Sharing good times and sad times are better in large families because there is always someone to talk to. It is good to get opinions from your siblings on how to handle delicate or disconcerting situations. Usually in large families, if the children are close in age they tend to travel in the same social circles, which is nice. There tends to be a closeness among the children that is a bonding that cannot be matched.

One of the woes with large families is that money is sometimes tight. It seems as though there is never enough money for all that is needed. Parents sometimes are working two jobs just to make ends meet. Also, the attention is not solely on one child; it has to be on every child. All children of the family have to be treated the same. At Christmas time, depending on the money situation, every present that the children want cannot be bought. So parents have to pick and choose the best ideas from the lengthy lists they receive from their children. Trying to keep your home neat is much harder because there are so many people in the house. Everyone is different; some are neat; some are not. So, the parents have to be very specific in relating to the children their responsibilities in the household.

These are just a few ideas, but there are so many more things that could be said. I could go forever, but let's just leave it to say, that family life has its ups and downs. As with anything, life can be wonderful or it can be blase. Life is what you make it.
