How many brothers and sisters do you have?!!!

Sep 26 '00

I come from a rather large extended family. My father has been married three times, (my mother being the second wife). My mother has been married twice. Each of their spouses now, have been married before also. I have 1 full blooded sister, 3 full blooded brothers, 1 half sister, 3 half brothers, 1 step sister, and 3 step brothers. That is 13 in all including me. (I hate the half and step labels. As far as I am concerned, the are all equally my brothers and sisters.)

The one thing about a large family like mine, is that it is never boring. There is always something going on, whether it be fighting, laughter, sadness, or any other thing that goes on. Another thing, is that with such a variety of family members, coming from different parents, there are an assortment of personalities. I will describe each of our personalities, and a story of some that I remember from growing up, that was good for a laugh, for many years to come. First I would like to say that unfortunately I do not know my two brothers from my fathers first wife, due to some grudges that their mother and grandparents put in their heads. I won't go into details, just take my word for it.

First is my brother Norman (same mother and father).
He is the quiet shy type, and he embarrasses easily. He never really got into to much trouble. But he was very protective of the rest of us, and would not hesitate to defend one of us. One of favorite memories referring to Norman, was the time that he decided he was going ice skating. We lived in a house on my grandfathers land, right next to them. Back then we did not have a regular sceptic system. We had an open sewer, that was buried way out in the fields, where no one usually went. Well this one winter, when it was froze over, Norman decided he was going to try and ice skate over it, just to see if it would hold him. Well guess what, it didn't. He got about half way across, when the ice gave way.in he went. He came home soak and wet, dripping with sewer, and oh boy the smell. It took my mother an hour to get him cleaned up, and smelling better. All the while she laughed at him, while all he could do was cry that he had fallen in the "POOP". He can now laugh about it, but he wasn't laughing back then.

Second is my brother Troy (both parents the same).
I never knew Troy, he was born before me, and passed away when he was five months old. So I can't really tell you anything about him.

Third is me.
I have always been the one that would do anything for any one, even a stranger. But that was always my down fall, so my parents say, they think I am too nice sometimes. People have been known to take advantage of me, and I am too nice, to put a stop to it. I have also always been somewhat of a clown, with a good sense of humor, always looking for a laugh. One of my most embarrassing moments in my junior high school days, was when I was 14 years old. I was on the phone one day with my boy friend. We had gotten on the subject of religion, and he asked me if I had ever been baptized. I wasn't sure, so I asked my mother. She said "No, you were never baptized, but you were circumcised." She had said it so seriously, that I didn't realize what she had said. So this is what I told my boyfriend. I actually told my boyfriend that I was circumcised I was never so embarrassed in my life. I think I stunned him speechless. As soon as I said it, my mother broke out in laughter, and I realized what I had just said. I hurried up and got off the phone. The next day in school, my boyfriend and I had a good laugh over it, and we never mentioned it again. I wish I could say the same about my mother. She told everyone that would listen. It was a long standing joke in our family and actually still is. Though now I even get a laugh out of it.

Forth, it my sister Rocky (real name Raquel, but she would choke me if she knew I told you that.) (both parents the same)
Wow, are we as different as night and day. She has got to be the dullest person on earth. Don't get me wrong, I love her with all my heart, but she needs to lighten up a bit. She has no sense of humor what so ever. She gets offended very easily. There is no joking with her. Now Rocky on the other hand, never really did much that would make you laugh, like I said, she is kind of dull, so what I am going to write about her, is a miracle of faith. When she was three years old, we lived in a house, that had three floors, plus the basement, which was only halfway under ground, so it was 3 1/2 stories high. One day, she was in Arric's bedroom with him, and they were playing Donnie and Sher. She was standing on the window sill, in front of an open screened in window, singing her little heart out. Arric decided that he wanted up there also, and when he went to get up, he grabbed hold of Rocky for balance, and accidently pushed her out the window. She fell 3 1/2 stories to the ground, falling through rose bushes, and landing on large garden rocks. Miraculously, and to every ones relief, after being examined by the ER doctor, it was found that she had not one broken bone, not one bruise, not one scrape, nothing at all. She was perfectly ok. To this day, our only explanation is that God was watching over her that day.

Fifth is my brother Arric ( the last of my full blooded siblings.) He is the dare devil of the family. He will try anything, and even if he gets hurt, go back for more. You never know what he might do next. He has done so many crazy things, but I think the craziest, was the time he decided he was going road skiing. It was dangerous, but it was a sight to see. With out anyone knowing, one day, he took a pair of old shoes, and nailed them to wooden planks. Then later on that afternoon, when my mother was leaving to go somewhere, he sneaked up behind her minivan, wearing his make shift ski's, and held onto the bumper. I just happened to look out the front door, just as my mother was pulling away. There skidding down the road behind her, was my daring brother. He seamed to be enjoying himself, until she hit a pot hole in the road. I think that scared him. He started to scream franticly, and waving one arm back and forth, trying to get my mothers attention. When she finally seen him, and stopped, he could do nothing but laugh hysterically, and say "Boy was that fun!! Can I do it again mom?" Thank goodness that the speed limit was only 20 mile and hour.

Sixth is my brother Dustin (same father different mother)
Dustin I believe will be the most successful of us all. He is a college student, studying criminal law. He was one of the popular ones when in high school. He can always be found with at least a dozen friends. He was one of the school football heroes. One of his good assets, is that he is sensitive to other peoples feelings. He is not afraid to let his emotions show. Though Dustin has grown into quite a decent young man, he has had his times too. He was the baby of the family, and very spoiled. What ever Dustin wanted Dustin got. I remember when he was about ten years old, he insisted that he just had to have a bee bee gun. My parents wasn't sure that he was old enough, they debated on this for two months prior to Christmas. They finally decided to give it a chance. Christmas eve. we were watching some Christmas shows, and then the movie A Christmas Story came on, and we watched that as well. The next morning we all got up and started to open our presents. All of a sudden, Dustin let out a blood curdling scream. When we looked his way, he was holding his bee bee gun. I threw it aside, and said that he did not want it. We were all bewildered, because that had been all he talked about for months. When my parents asked him why, all he could say, was "I don't want to shoot my eye out!!!" We all then realized what was wrong, and started to laughed. It was the movie the night before. The little boy in the movie had wanted a bee bee gun, and when he got it, the very first time he used it, a bee bee ricochet and hit his glasses and cracked them. Well Dustin didn't wear glasses, so he was afraid that he would shoot his eye out. We all tried to tell him that it was just a movie, and the chances of that happening were about one in a million. But he would not hear it. He wanted no part of that bee bee gun. To this day, we still laugh about the Christmas that he got what he wanted, and gave it back.

Seventh is my sister Tina.(same father different mother)
She is just plain old down to earth. You can tell her anything, and she will not tell a soul. She can always be counted on when a listening ear is needed.

Eighth is my sister Sherri.(her mother married my father)
She is known in our family as the baby machine. She is 27 years old, and now getting ready to have child number five. She and her husband are also in the process of adopting a boy who has been their foster son for two years. Girls like Sherri are rare. Though she was always into the typical girl things, she was also into the not so girlish things. She played baseball the whole way through little league, till she got to high school, where she had to play softball instead. She also played peewee football for two years, and Jr High football for one year. She would have continued, if her grades had not started to suffer. She decided that her grades were more important. She is one of a kind. To tell the truth, she and I are closer than my sister Rocky and I. While growing up, I was her idle. She wanted to do everything that I did. I can always count on her. We have had some great laughs growing up, some that I was involved in and some I wasn't, where I could laugh as hard as the rest. So I will tell you about one that didn't involve me, I mean why embarrass myself further.
She was in 8th grade, and you know how kids love to chew gum in the class that they are allowed. Well her group of friends took turns bringing in the gum. One day it was this boys turn. He brought in what they all believed to be Chicklets. It looked like one and tasted like one, so it was one. WRONGThey all chewed their gum during first period, by the time second period rolled around, they all had to go to the bathroom. You see the boy who gave them the gum was quite a jokester, and he pulled a good one that day. He had given them all EXLAX GUM. Now my sister had two pieces, oops, she didn't quite make it. She had an accident, and had to go home from school. She was very embarrassed. Though her friends laughed about it for a while, she soon joined in because she knew that they all knew that it was not her fault. This is one for the books. It is in our family laughter archives.

Ninth is my brother Tinker (real name Gary)(he is Sherri's full blooded brother, his mother is married to my father)
He is what most people would call the black sheep of the family, or the bad seed. I mean he is very much loved. He just can't seem to keep himself out of trouble. He drinks way to much, we all think he is an alcoholic. He has done his share of drugs. He has spent time in jail. Most of his friends are trouble, he kind of fits in well with them. If he doesn't find trouble, trouble always manages to find him. All in all, he is a good person, he just has some issues that the rest of us do not understand.

Last but not least, are my last two brothers Roger and Scott.(their father is married to my mother)
Both of them were already grown up and married by the time that our parents got together. I don't know what it was like growing up with them. They are both great men. They have always been accepting of us from the time our parents married. They have treated us like part of the family.

Our family is a little out of the ordinary, but it is our family, and for the most part, we lived in two different households. Things weren't always easy. I mean, we always had everything we needed, but there were times that money was tight, which can be expected of a family of such size. Split down, with the kids who lived at home, each household had anywhere from 4-8 kids at one time. Oh yes, there were the sibling rivalries, but nothing that we couldn't over come. But we wouldn't have been an all American family otherwise. The most important thing was that our parents had more than enough love and affection to go around. Another thing that I am thankful for, is that we did not grow up in a household where there were drugs, alcohol and/or abuse.

So you see, it doesn't matter if you are a family of 3 or a family or 15, as long as there is love, laughter, respect, and all those good things, the good times can by far out weigh the bad.
