"Let Those Who Ride, Decide!"

Feb 02 '00 (Updated Mar 20 '00)

I'm not going to tell you whether or not my son is circumcised. It's none of your business. My son isn't old enough yet to give an "informed consent" for his dad to talk about his private parts. They are in fact, his "privates", so I'll respect that, and when he's old enough, he can choose whether or not he wants to reveal what decision we made for him. I do have some thoughts on this issue however.

Mothers, please don't tell us what you did or didn't do to your wee little one's wee little one. Remember when you were in Junior High and your mom pulled out those backyard nudie pictures? You know the ones taken when you were just starting to walk, or maybe you and your brother were sharing a bath? I think that your young sons deserve the chance to write about the state of their own penises when and if they decide to. Until that time, they would probably not like to hear that it was talked about in such an open forum as this. Maybe you could just state your opinion on the subject and leave it at that. Well you know what I mean here I hope.

Now then, as to the appearance issue, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Enough said on that issue. What about the locker room? That's tough, and maybe we should discuss why, at such a tender age, as we are progressing at our own rate through puberty, do our schools expect us to undress openly? At no other time in life, except for military service which is voluntary today, is the locker room mandatory. Why, I wonder?

The debate over quality of orgasm reminds me of the cocktail party scene from the old Woody Allen film where the women are discussing the correct type of orgasm, clitoral vs. vaginal, a debate that raged for a while in the seventies. One women remarks that her doctor told her that she was having the wrong kind of orgasm to which the Allen character retorts, "I've never had a bad orgasm, the worst one that I had was pretty much right on the money." I think that the same holds true for all men whether they are intact or not.

As to cleanliness, I don't think that Van Gogh's ear was any cleaner once he lopped it off. He probably ran a pretty good risk of infection at first, and in the long run I bet he still had wax in his ear canal.

So, at the end of the day, it comes down to this in my opinion. . . Ouch!
There's not a really good reason to do it, but it doesn't seem to have any deep lasting effect either, other than scarring. But still, there is that big ouch factor. I wouldn't tattoo my baby so that he or she would look like me. It would be cute I suppose. On the other hand, some people pierce little girls ears as infants. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!

One last thought. I think that the burgeoning "Intact Movement" needs a catchy bumper sticker slogan to get this issue out in the open as it were.
The pro-natural selection/anti-helmet law people have "let those who ride decide". There's "Use it or lose it" which is about voting rights or muscles or something. I wish I could think of a really good phrase like "It's a prepuce not a choice". No, that doesn't work. I don't know, I've got some time to think about it, and maybe if we all put our heads together (whoops) well you know. . .
