As I prepared for the big day of my wedding, birth control was the farthest thing from my thoughts. We wanted children; maybe lots of them and there weren't any serious issues about "when." We decided to try...Return to opinion

The more I read about the Depo-Provera shot, the more worried I get. I recently gave birth to a beautiful baby boy with no problems. I had been on the Depo for almost 6 years! I have an 8 yr. old and a 6 yr old, and had decided to have more children. I quit taking the Depo in June 2000 and was pregnant by the end of Sept 2000. My periods came back right on time (thank goodness) The only problem I have had previously is the weight gain and some mood swings, which I thought was pretty normal untill now. My little boy is now 2 months old and I am on the Depo again. I am wanting to have another child later on. But after reading all of the horror stories, I'm not sure if this is the right birth control for me. Even though I had no problems getting pregnant last time, things may change? If you have anymore helpful information, please e-mail me at davenport@brightok.net

In Respect of Your Experience (Reply to this comment)
by Sharona61bio
I am a 39 year-old woman about to take my first Depo shot. I am not taking it for birth control but to stop the hellish periods that I've been having for the past 2 years. I take no hormones at this time but I have 2 weeks of 'period sickness'. It starts at mid-cycle. I have 3 days of a migraine like headache that no pain reliever can touch. Then comes the dull heavy cramping, meaness, anxiety and physical shakiness. The first day of my period is no problem. Then the pain starts building along with the flow. By the end of day 2, I am rolling on the bed. Even a trip to the grocery store is torture. The clots are the size of golfballs and I'm messing myself up again and again(if you get my drift.) By day 4 or 5 I am becoming a human being again but then the migraine like headache comes again and lasts for another 3 days. I work a very physical job and it takes every bit of my self-discipline to pull myself together and go to work with the lingering fear of having an 'accident.'
I understand the significance of weight gain but am willing to work with it for the sake of ridding the other. I feel for all the women who've had bad experiences but to me it sounds like a Godsend. I will post again after my shot and let you know what happens.

Thanks for all of the helpful information. Although I am not on depo, my husband and I are considering different kinds of birth control since I cannot take the pill. Your review was well written, and highly informative. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

What a story! Gosh, I bet that was terrible to live through!
I've been on Depo for 2½ years, and haven't had a period in that time. But, I seem to be doing ok otherwise.
I will definitely check into the websites you listed.
Thanks for the info!
