Mom, I'm bored!

The hockey net sits on the driveway, hockey sticks strewn across the lawn. There’s the basketball net with the ball lying at it’s base, next to the bikes thrown down in haste. In the back yard the kiddie pool is full, water temperature is perfect. The only movement in the water is a leaf floating idly in the ripples caused by the light breeze. It’s a beautiful summer day, not a cloud to be seen. Not too hot, not too cool, just right for a day outdoors.
And you’re inside, trapped by the interminable laundry, the endless dishes, and the need to vacuum yet again! As you rush through the house, picking up possibly 500 toys on your way down the hallway, you hear the familiar refrain…”Mom, I’m bored!” Your suggestions…go play with your friends….there’s no one home….go play in the pool…we don’t feel like it…play with your toys…we don’t have any good ones. You become more and more frustrated by the moment. You know their best friends are in their back yard playing, you know they love playing in the pool, you know they have a lot of “good toys”, didn’t you just pick up 500 of them? And still those faces look up at you so mournfully, saying “you’re mom, don’t you have all the answers?”
It’s at that moment that you realize that you, too, are bored. Sure you’re busy, but since when has laundry and dishes and vacuuming been stimulating? “You!” you yell pointing at your son. “Go get my purse!” “You!” you snap to your daughter, “get the sunscreen and the mosquito repellant!” As they are running frantically trying to find their designated items you are grabbing the cooler and throwing drinks, ice and fruit into it. The kids are looking extremely perplexed. “Get in the car!” you order. And off you go….no particular destination in mind, but when you get there you’ll know!
I highly recommend an adventure like this once in a while. I have taken my kids to the Nature Centre, the Zoo, and even to the beach on the spur of the moment. Miniature golf and the go-carts are always a good bet too! Remember, just because you’re busy, it doesn’t mean you’re not bored, too. Your kids will love you for it! And it just might make the laundry a little easier to handle when you get back to it.
