THEY TOOK AWAY HER CHILD TODAY (an original poem)

THEY TOOK AWAY HER CHILD TODAY
They took away her child today
And didn't have a clue
Why she was throwing such a fit
When this was "right" to do.
"Don't be so childish," she was told,
In patronizing voice.
"This was decided by the judge--
You do not have a choice."
There always had been prejudice,
Due to that label: "slow,"
And, on that January day,
There had been ice and snow.
She noticed they were low on food
And braved the winter storm
To buy it--left her sleeping child
At home, all safe and warm.
This just confirmed, to made-up minds,
That she was less-than-smart.
Today, they took away a child
And broke a mother's heart.
