Why The Debate???

Jul 05 '00

Ok, there are A LOT of people out there that feel so strongly about their desire of either breast or bottle feeding their child, that they border on being rude!

A friend of mine posted her epinion about her choice to bottle feed. By the time I got to read it there were already 15 comments! About a third of them supported her with her decision even if they didn't agree with her. But the majority criticized, maligned, and accused! What is the big idea?

This is EPINIONS right? So, aren't we allowed to voice our opinions with out being called a "bad parent"? Or a "negligent mother"? I mean, come on! If bottle feeding was that dangerous, companies like Proctor and Gamble wouldn't be ALLOWED to manufacture formula!

Yes, there are a lot of benefits to breast feeding. Yes, there are a lot of benefits to bottle feeding. But just because you choose one over the other doesn't give you the right to belittle every mother out there that doesn't do what you think is right.

And in case you are wondering, I bottle fed AND breast fed between my four children. But I would never tell any mother that they are less caring because I don't agree with their decision. Most mothers want the best for their children. And most mothers do what they feel is best for their child.

For the bottle feeding mothers, I know that you have your own variety of reasons as to why you don't breast feed. And I applaud you for thinking things through and doing what is right for you and your child.

For the breast feeding mothers, I believe you are to be commended as well. Making a decision to breast feed takes a lot of determination and commitment.

I am not going to go into the health issues here because that is not what this article is about. This article is about the freedom of choice! We (Mothers) are given a choice when we bring our wee ones into the world. How we make that choice is by the options that we are given, and the educational tools that are available to us. Why we make our decisions is based on each of our individual circumstances.

Why do breast feeding mothers tend to label other mothers just because they bottle feed? That just doesn't make sense to me. I know that it is also the other way around but not nearly as much.

I think that all mothers who make a conscious decision either way is to be applauded! And as long as the person you disagree with isn't raising YOUR child you shouldn't feel as though you have to agree with them, just support them in their decision. My mother raised me with a saying that I think works well here, "Just because I don't like something you DO, doesn't mean that I don't like YOU." Think about it!
