Indoor Art Activities for PreschoolersJan 05 '01 Write an essay on this topic. Are the kids getting tired of the cold and snowy weather? Need some new indoor activity ideas? Here are a bunch of easy to make activities that you can do with your preschooler. You might want to print these out and save them for rainy days also. Hand/Footprints: You will need 2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of salt and 3/4 cup of warm water. Mix ingredients together in a bowl. If the dough is a little dry, add water a little at a time. Make a ball of dough then flatten it to about one inch thickness in the shape of a circle. Press the child's hand or foot into the dough to make an imprint. Gently lift it off and bake the dough at 325 degrees in the oven until hard or you can let it air dry a couple of days. Once dry you can decorate or paint it. Tip: The dough can be colored by adding some food coloring before pressing the child's hand or foot into the dough. Indoor Sandbox: You will need a cardboard box or plastic baby bathtub, puffed wheat or rice cereal and some sand toys. Create an indoor sandbox by filling the container with inexpensive cereal. Have the kids use pails, shovels, dump trucks, measuring spoons, cups and bowls. This is a lot easier to clean up then sand as long as you don't add water! Bath Paint: You will need shaving cream, food coloring, muffin tin, spoon, paint brushes, sponges. Place the shaving cream in each section of the muffin tin. Add food coloring to each one and stir. When the kids are in the bath, allow them to use the "paint" to paint themselves, the tub, the walls. Clean up is easy! Check first for allergies. Supervision is recommended! Fishing Fun: You will need construction paper, scissors, pens, pencil, small box. Cut out shapes of fish with the construction paper. On each fish write an instruction such as "find something blue" or "count to 10". Place the fish in a box or container. Have your child pull out a fish and complete the instruction. Binoculars: Tape two empty toilet paper rolls together side by side. Use markers or crayons to decorate. Cover the open ends with colored cellophane. Attach a piece of yarn to the top of the rolls to the child can wear the binoculars around their neck. Body Portraits: Have the child lay down on a large piece of wrapping paper or paper bags taped together. Trace the outline of their body. Let the children fill in the details. Dribble Glue: Dribble glue on lightweight cardboard to make a design. Allow to dry overnight. The next day, paint the whole cardboard with one color of paint. The paint will not stick to the dried glue so it will stand out raised and shiny against the colored background. Very neat! Mail Time: Tape a large box at both ends. A pillowcase can be used as a mailbag. Save junk mail and used envelopes, and stickers. Use markers and construction paper to decorate the box. Cut along the top to make a slot for deposit of mail. Make a door flap in front to retrieve mail. Make a hat band out of paper and write "mail carrier" on it. Well that should keep you and the kids busy for awhile!
