Croc Fact: Croc Files is:
a) a brand of hanging file folders made of crocodile skin,
b) a hit show on the "Animal Planet" station about a guy who runs a zoo and takes care of animals, or
c) a crocodile.
It's b, a hit show on "Animal Planet!" Croc Files stars Steve and Terry Irwin. They run the Australia Zoo, rescue hurt animals, study animals, play with animals, and release rehabilitated animals into the wild. In their spare time they turn all of this into an amazingly entertaining TV show that is hardly "just for kids."
Croc Fact: the Australia Zoo is in:
a) Australia,
b) Florida, or
c) a crocodile.
That's right, it's a, Australia! Despite Steve's thick accent and mode of speech, which certainly lend color to the show, he's very easy to understand. I'm terrible at understanding thick accents, but I've never once had to turn on closed captioning to be able to figure out what he's saying.
Australia is a beautiful setting for this show. There is so much wildlife there, particularly of the reptile variety (yes, crocodiles!). Steve also makes field trips to other countries, including the US and Africa.
Both Steve and Terry are enthusiastic and amusing; their excitement is infectious. They have a way of talking that makes it clear they talk to kids a lot, but they aren't condescending in the way that so many such people are. I can't help but think that they'll make great parents (in several recent shows Terry looked rather pregnant!).
Croc Fact: Monty, Steve's childhood friend, is:
a) the producer of the show,
b) the camera man, or
c) a crocodile.
It's c, a crocodile! Steve grew up at the Australia Zoo, which was run by his parents, and his love of animals shows. He gets into some dicey scrapes, but it's pretty clear he knows where his boundaries are and how safe he is. For you parents, he likes to make it clear that people at home just shouldn't do the things he does. He often talks about respecting wildlife, caring for wildlife, and avoiding dangerous wildlife. He teaches people not to hate animals like snakes, crocodiles, and spiders, that as long as we're careful we can all co-exist.
You'll also get to see great outtakes (like the diamond-back rattler that bit the camera and scared the heck out of the camera man!), fantastic escapades (Steve and Terry moving Monty to a larger territory at the Australia Zoo, complete with Monty trying to attack the back hoe), and heartwarming stories (like the episode of animal releases into the wild).
It's hard to think of a more fun TV show than this. My fiancee and I try to watch it every night. It's a fantastic and relaxing way to unwind at the end of a day. Steve's antics never fail to amuse, and we learn something new with every episode.
Whether or not you have children, this is a wonderful show to turn to.
