WWJD...Do YOU Know What This Means?

Aug 31 '00

NOTE:
This editorial is in support of laryan's recent article called...WWJD Are We Really Asking? It will contain quotes from Lisa's editorial...

I recently had the pleasure of reading an opinion about the marketing craze of WWJD products by laryan. I agree with Lisa that these people are marketing geniuses, but...WWJD???

laryan writes...

In their jewelry case is an assortment of fine necklaces, rings and bracelets in fine metals. Nothing cheap here, but my eyes became riveted on a man's ring in pewter. The letters "WWJD" were arranged in a square with a large diamond in the hook of the "J". The price was $120. In my high school terminology, that ring could really mess up someone's face.

Do any of you really believe that this is what Jesus would do? I think not!!!

Living in Japan for 13 years, I had never heard of WWJD. About a year ago, I noticed that a lady I work with wears 6 little cloth bracelets on her wrist that say WWJD.

One day I decided to ask her what they meant. At first, she looked at me in complete disbelief, then she proceeded to look up and down her arm like she was taking inventory. When she came to the one that was least tattered and looked pretty new, she opened the clasp, removed it from her wrist, and placed it on mine.

Then she told me the story of the bracelet. She said that the minister who had given her the first bracelet told her that it means What Would Jesus Do. She was told that if anyone ever asked her what it meant, she was to take the best one she had, and give it to the person who wanted to know...

It made perfect sense to me! I didn't know what it meant, so she explained it to me because she said..."that's what Jesus would do"...

Now let me ask you this...if you are one of those people who spend all that money on expensive gold things that say WWJD...would you be willing to give that piece to someone who asked you what it meant?

I don't think so!!!

I guess the point that I am trying to make here is this...if you want to show that you are a Christian, there are better ways than spending money on gold and diamonds that say WWJD!

I don't think Jesus would do it...why do you think it is right for you?
