The SIDS rate has dropped by 50% (Reply to this comment)

That's right, since we started telling parents to put baby to sleep on his/her back the SIDS rate has dropped by at least 50%. Coincidence? I think not.

There is one scary result from the latest studies, though. Babies who routinely sleep on their backs are at far higher risk of SIDS if someone inadvertently puts them down on their tummies -- parents need to know this, too, so they can pass that information on to grandma or whoever else babysits.

As a NICU nurse, I still put most of my preemies to sleep on their tummies - it helps them use their accessory muscles to breathe. Besides, far too many of them have reflux. We do send a few babies home with instructions to put them on their tummies -- most go home with instructions to put them on their back or side, though. The statistics don't support any other advice.

I don't know if you read my review or not but as a new parent I listened to my doctors. Then I learned some things and found out all my family elders really DID know what they were talking about. The agon I would have been spared if I had just listened to them in the first place!!

the inconsistencies. With my firstborn, it was tummy sleeping. Nineteen months and one baby later, it was side sleeping. With my daughter, five years later, it was back sleeping. Hmmmmmm......
