Good Every-Day Frugal Tips!

Jan 01 '01

I enjoy being frugal and I really have to be. It is always a challenge to see just how far I can stretch a penny! Below are a few of the everyday frugal tips that I use!

1. Always keep baking soda handy. Buy it in bulk if possible. Use it for cleaning anything. Each time I buy a new box of washing powder for the laundry, I empty half of the powder into an old box. I then mix baking soda in each box to give me two full boxes of washing powders. Each box lasts for months.

2. Shop at thrift stores! I frequently go into the only one in my town. I can usually find my husband nice dress shirts for $1.35 each and even found myself a Gap dress last week for $1.95. I often find him nice ties for 50 cents each and lots of odds and ends.

3. Buy store brand food items. I shop at our Super Wal-Mart. I almost always buy their brand.

4. Try dry soup mixes. Buy in bulk if possible.

5. Eat less meat meals. Try to eat more rice and beans.

6. Combine errands and make only one trip into town per week.

7. Use electronic withdrawals to pay bills. It will save postage and time.

8. Shop at yard sales. You never know what you will find! Try to look for new items or items you can give as gifts. It's nice to have a gift stash for birthdays and Christmas.

9. Wear warm clothing around the house in the winter and save on heating costs. Wear cool clothes in the summer to save.

10. Use your local library! I rarely buy a book. If the library does not have the book I want, I do an inter-library loan and they get it for me. They also have videos for free that I rent.

11. Cut back on eating out. It really adds up!

12. Use a dab of toothpaste. There is really no need for a huge glob.

13. Drink more water and tea and less soda and coffee.

14. Drink less alcohol and stop smoking.

15. Re-use anything you can think of. Yes, I even wash out my baggies. I use so many that I would go broke buying baggies! Okay, maybe not, but why waste?

16. Eat up leftovers. If you know you won't want them the next day, freeze them for later.

I hope of these ideas help you out!
