Should you keep a child's birth name?

Mar 28 '00

Retaining birth names is something many adoptive parents don't consider or don't feel comfortable talking about. While giving a child a name is the prerogative of the birth parents, I feel that some consideration should be given to the child.

We adopted our daughter at 5 months and our son at 14 months. We gave them a first name and kept the first name their biological mother gave them as their middle name. We felt that their names were a part of who they were when we received them. They are also a part of their heritage since they are both Latino and their middle names reflect this. To us it was a gift from their biological mothers and we wanted them to keep it as part of their name.

They both know the history of their middle names as well as their heritage. I think when possible, adoptive children should retain at least one of their birth names. It may seem frivolous to some but I think it is a small gift for the child.
