People for the Ethical Treatment of Children
Jun 23 '00
They've gone to war again, and this time their weapon is violence and their victims are our kids.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, otherwise known as PETA, has come up with another volatile campaign to gain media time for their views. Last time they garnered a week's worth of TV news time with their ad campaign that suggested that it was better for college students to drink beer than milk, ostensibly because dairy cows suffer too much cruelty and indignity. Now they've gone up against McDonald's to call attention to their claims that cows are subject to too much cruelty in butchering.
I'm not here to argue the rights of Americans to be carnivores. I myself enjoy meat, as do my daughters, both of whom are aware of the source of hamburgers and bacon. If others choose to be vegetarians, I perfectly respect that choice as their right. I am not qualified to argue the points of butchering standards.
The problem is in how PETA has chosen to go about this campaign. Throughout the nation, they plan to hand out "Unhappy Meals" to children in McDonald's Playlands. Inside these meals will be graphic toys depicting a bloody knife-wielding Ronald McDonald and a cow with its throat slit. They feel it is important to counter McDonald's and their meals that encourage the continuation of 'addiction to meat' in this country.
Excuse me? Who do they think they are? Is there any consideration of how this might effect sensitive children? Do they care that such toys might cause the recipient to have nightmares or be traumatized? They say they will be careful about which children they will approach. How? Are they going to do a psychological profile on every child?
Just because a political group has an issue they feel is worth discussion is no reason to go so far as to traumatize innocent children in order to force a discussion of it. If any PETA representative approaches one of my children I will be hard pressed to restrain myself from decking him on the spot in a fit of parental protectiveness. I will definitely call the cops and my lawyer. I cannot believe in the 'ethics' of an organization that would have such disregard for the treatment of children.
Note: I understand that this is difficult to believe and many will be skeptical that this is a hoax. Please feel free to verify this information at PETA's site, www.PETA.com. An image of the 'Unhappy Meal' can be viewed at http://www.meatstinks.com/mcd/boxfullbig.jpg.
