It Used To Be Mine!

Mar 28 '00

Hi, Rotten here.

Again I am stepping in where normally women write, but hey, I know about this debate because I was very involved with it during my son's development.

My wife nursed our son for six months till she became ill and had to stop.

Her and I talked about how our son was going to be fed before he was even born. She told me that she wanted to nurse because it was better for the baby. I shrank from it a bit, okay I was jealous, I believed that those were mine (sorry ladies)and I didn't want to share.
But you know the saying, "Mothers Know Best!"

After a bit of grumbling under my breath I agreed after she stated all the facts about breastfeeding vs bottle feeding. All the nutrients, vitamins and close feelings between mother and son.
Okay, it also was our only child. (for more understand of that statement, read Blackelves, "#13 Was My Lucky Number") and she wanted everything to be perfect.

The morning our son was born I watched her put that little pink thing to her breast and I watched in awe as she fed him. It was pure wonder. I had never seen a woman breastfeed before and didn't really understand what it was about. But when I saw my wife's eyes light up and my son's little fist curl up against her chest, I knew that this right. I felt a tear in my eye at this sight and it was a moment I never forgot.

We all went out one evening and our son decided he was hungry. My wife looked up at me and said she would go to the car to feed the baby. I looked around at the customers in the resturant and shook my head. I took the baby blanket, wrapped it around her for privacy and said, "This is the most remarkable thing in the world, and if people can't understand it then they have a problem."
My wife looked at me with your big blue eyes and thanked me without saying a word.

I never had a problem with her nursing in front of others. She always used a blanket over her so that her breast was revealed to staring disgusted eyes.

When her illness first attacked her (she had a mini-stroke five months after the baby was born), I would bring our son to her bed, craddle him properly next to her and let him nurse with me guiding him and her.
Of course, she got weaker and couldn't nurse no longer.

But those monthes of nursing were beautiful and wonderful. I couldn't believe I really didn't want to share my wife with that wonderful little being. I now understand the beauty of breastfeeding and that it is the most natural thing for a woman to do in the world.

Men..if your wife breastfeeds, watch her eyes as the child feeds and you will see the most wonderful thing there...Love
