I can remember my oldest son (then in first grade) coming home and asking to watch The Simpsons, because everybody else was watching it. My response to his request was: "You'll never watch that show!" As far as I was concerned Bart was a disrespectful thug who didn't deserve the air time he was receiving; his father, Homer, was a dimwitted arrogant pig! As for the rest of the family--as far as I was concerned--who knew or cared what they were like!
There was no way I would let my children watch 'The Simpsons' and become as corrupt as the rest of dysfunctional society, who would watch such a show. Mind you...I never watched a single episode of the show! Boy, have I ended up eating crow!
My husband, being a MAN, had different thoughts on the matter. But I WON out! About two years ago I either lost my mind or I mellowed out and started letting the kids watch The Simpsons; partly because at that point the boys knew what type of behavior was "acceptable" to me and they understood what Bart did mom did not find acceptable--so they better not do anything Bart would do!
When the kids got the green light to watch the show, they watched it as many times as it came on during the week. I started watching the show with them so I could keep informed as to what the show was about. Of course, I found out by watching the show that I was 'partially' RIGHT! Bart is a disrespectful, inconsiderate, brat! And Homer is dimwitted and somewhat borders on plain old stupid.
But what I wasn't expecting was the sensitivity and caring these characters really have towards each other. Marge and Homer love their kids--whether their kids are right or wrong. They try to provide food, shelter, morals and love for their family. They (especially Homer) doesn't always go about things the right way, but basically he has a good heart.
By watching the show, I found out that it wasn't anything like I thought it was. I saw a little bit of myself and my family in each of the characters. I've come away from the experience of watching The Simpsons with more understanding, tolerance and patience for others and myself.
I must admit my first impression of the show was wrong. It took me a long time to get around to opening my eyes, seeing the truth, admitting it and realizing there is a little bit of Bart, Homer, Marge, Lisa and Maggie in all of us.
The show is an original which others have tried to pattern, it is entertaining with certain episodes having moral messages which are thought provoking.
