Doing The Big Spit
May 04 '00
If you're like I was during the first months of my pregnancy, you probably feel like you've been hit by a mac truck that stopped just short of finishing you. You're head hurts. Your stomach hurts, and you can't think of a thing to eat that you won't lose later.
I 'prayed to the porcelain gods' at least four times a day in the beginning of my pregnancy. It was getting extremely embarrassing to constantly be running out of the room towards my friend, the toilet.
I was able to learn a few tricks, though. First of all, don't fight the urge to toss those cookies. You will only make things worse when the food forces it's way out.
Second, remember, if it doesn't sound good going down. . . what will it be like coming back. Popsicles and soda are your friends, but eggs and potatoes are your enemies. Gingerale and 7up can really help, too. Leave them out at room temperature, and pour them over ice if you have to, but don't drink too fast.
Chew everything like you've never chewed before. The smoother things are, the less traumatic they are to your tummy, and the better chance there is they will stay down.
Let your husband help you. Tell him what makes you feel better, whether it's a hug, a kiss, or him stroking your hair. If he rubs your tummy, be sure he knows to be extremely gentle. Back and feet massages are also known to help.
Also, try to remember that he doesn't feel sick, so he needs your understanding. You're going through a lot of changes right now, and he's having to stand by and watch. Guys don't generally like to feel that helpless, so let him know how he can help you.
I also learned of some things to get that will help sooth your stomach. Get yourself some peppermints, and a syrup medicine called, "Ematrol". This medicine is completely safe for the baby, as it mostly consists of various sugars, and will calm your stomach usually on contact. You can take it every 15 minutes until you feel better, and it even tastes pretty good in the cherry flavor.
Of course, saltines do help, but don't over do it. Only eat a few at a time, and if they come back; just try again.
The best advice I can give you, however, is just to hang in there. Usually you will start to feel better around the 12th week. And besides, this and your pregnancy will pass, and you will be given the best gift in the world for your trouble. Believe me, when that baby looks up at you for the first time, all the problems in the world will fade away.
