One boy's storyOct 26, 2000 Write an essay on this topic.I hope I am not out of line bringing this topic to this site, but when I heard about this little boy I was moved to tears and wanted to pass it on. I heard the story of Pj Bourgeois of Ohio on the Oprah Winfrey Show just yesterday afternoon. He was abused by his father to the point of his death at only three years old. For some reason that I am unclear of, Pj's father had full custody and his mother had visitation rights. According to his mom's story he was like any other child, but according to his dad's story he was a discipline problem. Pj's dad felt the need to discipline his child with violence. The night Pj died he was beaten because he wouldn't eat his dinner. As we all know there are many times when your child just won't eat his supper but is that a reason to resort to violence? There were other instances noted on the show in which there may have been a clue to this violence and I felt the need to bring it to the attention of other parents. There are also other circumstances about this case that disturb me but I am focusing here on Pj's dad's method of discipline. There are many ways to discipline a child and it is the parents perrogative to chose their own method, but I urge you to choose carefully. Think twice before raising your hand to a child, because that can escalate to harsh realities. My son is only a year old so I have not had the experience of taking disciplinary actions, but I hope that I will be able to solve problems in a civilized manner. And, I hope all of you who read this can do so as well.  |
