I came across the yearbook (Reply to this comment)
by bobbo428
I came across my junior high yearbook yesterday for the first time in decades while cleaning at my mom's house--I thought I had either lost it or tossed it, but there it was. I managed to make it through it without any post-traumatic flashbacks.

There are bullies in my neighborhood (Reply to this comment)
by bobbo428
There are some bullies in my neighborhood. There is a horde of middle school-aged children who get off on hassling passersby. Because I walk with a limp, one kid made a remark about it. I told her, "It isn't cool to make fun of people." I then turned on my music to drown out any further mockery I'd hear. My neighbor shares my dislike for those kids--they are loud, abrasive, and disrespectful of adults and each other.

AinsleyJo,
Thanks for your comment! I know what your friend's grandson is going through. School should be a place of learning, not torment. I hope that this kid's peers will develop some sensitivity--they should be made to hear songs like that Mark Wills hit that was covewred by Peter, Paul, and Mary. BTW, on Saturday I heard a commercial on the radio that encourages kids to develop greater sensitivity--it features PPM's version of "Don't Laugh at Me." It's an excellent public service ad.

I'm glad you found a supportive environment in New York City. Ironically, just a couple weeks ago, I heard a quote about the Big Apple on a TV show about that city:
"In New york, the people get praised for what they got made fun of in Podunk."
New York, like most big cities, is a double-edged sword, of course. The uptight, impersonal atmosphere would take a lot of getting used to, as I am sort of a dreamy person.

I'm glad there's laws that look out for kids today. I think that the school shootings have fianlly opened the eyes of many people. It's tragic, though, that it had to come to that in the first place.

Thanks for the supportive comment. I'm glad that things are going better for your son. Sometimes it's just one kid that does the bullying. Best of luck to him this year

Touching story... (Reply to this comment)
by ChrstStnr1
I was teased relentlessly, also, for looking like a skinny boy, a flat-chested boy, at that. Thank god I blossomed at 20 or so, left my god-forsaken town and moved to New York (not for its shallow ways, which it has, but for its acceptance of anyone and everything that's different, I suppose.) It's been a tough road, though, but I never look back to that close-minded town. They all wish they could've "gotten out," but I did and they didn't.

A Sad (Reply to this comment)

commentary on society sometimes! I also wrote an epinion on Bullies and Teasers a few months ago. My neighborhood has a bully that is a pint sized terror! I have learned to take my children out of the bullies direct attack whenever possible.
Great editorial!

Fortunately today (Reply to this comment)
by Rosalyce
there are laws that will protect a child that is going through what you should never have gone through in school. Unfortunately a lot of those kids slip through the cracks because they won't tell their parents because of the mistaken idea that no one cares,or it's somehow their fault, so they try to get through it alone and therefore do poorly in school, drop out, turn to drugs or as you mentioned, commit suicide.
What a shame that one of your teachers didn't step in and do what should have been done with you and with the bullies.

My child was being picked on too (Reply to this comment)
by pholdermomof3
I wrote an Epinion a few months ago about my son being picked on. Thank goodness that child that was picking on him moved and this year has been much better.
I agree that parents should take it seriously. I feel that that is why a lot of the school shootings have happened. Kids just take and take and take until they can't take it anymore. I don't agree that the shootings are the answer, but I don't think they would have happened if someone would have stepped in and stopped the harassment.
