Touch Gloves and Come Out Fighting

Jan 04 '01

Will each side please go back to your respective corners for round two. I am sick and tired of people writing false information on the Breastfeeding of infants issue. Yesterday was the straw that broke the camels back. Someone wrote an article sighting a statistic that you could raise your babies Intelligence Quotient numbers by Breastfeeding. This is so lame where do I begin. Statistics based upon medical research need to be done by the Scientific method of experimentation. The principal behind this is you form a hypothesis based upon a theory you have. You then alter one thing between the two groups to prove or disprove your theory. Can you imagine testing the IQ jump based upon Breastfeeding? How was that experiment designed? You would need twins who are treated in exactly the same fashion. These babies would need to be fed at exactly the same moment, spoken to in exactly the same way, played with in the same fashion, etc. One baby being bottle-fed and one from the breast. I wonder how many moms signed up for that one? Do you sense a slight distrust of what I read? If breast milk made individuals more intelligent I would think that women would be asked to pump the extras and have it bottled for those a little low on the IQ scale.

The reality is the babies IQ is probably raised by the intense bonding and mom talking to the baby and showering it with attention while she breastfeeds or bottle-feeds. There in lies the truth. It is not the method but the attention showered upon the baby. My two children are both highly gifted. Both were bottle-fed. Do I sit in my room and cry that their IQ has suffered? Evidently it has not.

No one disputes the fact that to breastfeed is very good for an infant. It is natural, offers immunity and provides a loving bond. I also say if you are bottle-feeding for whatever reason, your child can be just as bright, just as loved, just as happy. Don’t let anyone make you feel guilty for this choice. Your body is just that. What is good for one person may not be suitable to you. I had a very painful childbirth, which ended in a caesarian section. I found putting the baby on my lap was very painful and couldn’t wait to put the baby down. After trying the Breast-feeding for one week I had really reached my pinnacle of pain tolerance and went on to Bottle feed my children. I showered them with as much love and attention as any Breastfed baby and the results are there.

To anyone professing Breastfeeding is the only method of feeding your child, rest assured it is not. The world is a big place with a lot of opinions. Doesn’t that make living on this spinning globe out in the middle of the blue abyss so wonderful?
