The Way I Was Told About My Adoption
Feb 16 '00
I was 8 months old at the time of my adoption, so i did not remember the motel room that a state worker took me to. Also, I did not remember the happiness in my new parents faces when they met me that first day. What I do know is that I was loved and had a very happy life. The adoption was final on August 8, 1969. One year from that date, my mother and father held a small "adoption" party for me and always gave me a little something. This went on up until I graduated high school. I have always known since that first year. I am glad that I was raised to know about my adoption. Every year as I turned a year older, I asked more questions. Until I turned 26 and I found my natural parents. I had that "got to know" feeling and had to find them. So, I made some calls, wrote a few letters, and got the paper work I needed to put an ad in the paper. The very first night the ad ran, my natural grandmother called. I was nervous, excited, and just plan scared all at once. Since then, I have met my natural family and it was a wonderful reunion. All I can say to parents who adopt, please do not keep this a secret, because in the end you and your adopted child will have hurt feelings. I am very grateful for my adoptive parents thoughtfulness in having me grow up knowing and learning as I got older about my natural parents.
