| DWG's Full Review: didymos baby sling |
Okay, you don't NEED this sling. The $40 NoJo or OTSBH or Maya will do you just fine. But oh, it's fun. And you'll look really, really cool. Well, as cool as you CAN look w/ a baby attached to you, but still. I had the NoJo and a sling I made with my first child. While expecting my second, I began to worry about how I was going to get anything done w/ a kid hanging off of me. Even though I love the slings, I just didn't want to have to chase my 3 yo all over w/ a baby in front of me and my house just isn't big enough to allow me to wear my Kelty backpack inside.
I came across the website for the Didymos sling, and I saw that it can be worn as a front, hip, or BACK carrier. Ostensibly, you can wear a kid on your back w/ the regular slings, but I've never felt secure that way. The Didymos allows you to wear the child in a backpack-like pouch. But it was over $100. That just seemed extreme.
I did a little research--checking other sites that sold the sling, emailing moms that had used it--and decided that, while overpriced, it was worth getting. They are made from organically grown fibers (mostly cotton, some contain linen or wool) and require an enormous amount of fabric. I was willing to pay the price for the organic fabric and the instructions on how to tie it--because other than that, it's just a big ol' piece of fabric.
The Didymos comes in several sizes, I advise getting the length that allows you all the carries. It is NOT worth it to just be able to use it as a hip carry or cradle hold sling. Get a Maya wrap for that. But with the Size 5 I got, I can tie my baby to the front of me facing out (his favorite), facing in (great for naps), on my hip, or on my back. It takes practice to get the back carry down, but it is really secure and muuuuch lighter than the Kelty.
There are many colors to choose from, some have fringey edges. I'm not a fringey kinda gal, and I'm certain my husband doesn't want to sport fringe, so I got the Indio print--kinda batik-y, vaguely ethnic w/o being too much. I get comments all the time.
You do have to re-tie it every time you use it, so it is not as fast to put on and take off as a regular sling. I tend to use mine when I know I'll be carrying for a long time, and use my NoJo when I'm going in and out of the car.
Didymos come from Germany and sometimes distributors have to order your selection from the main office, so it can take a while, but it's worth the wait. So, while it is a far from necessary item, the Didymos sling will make you the envy of your crunchy granola, sling-wearing friends. And you'll meet all sorts of people when you wear it out.
