And they call that Morning Sickness???

Sep 27 '00

Morning sickness...that is what doctors call the nausea you have while you are pregnant. Myself, I call it "the worse experience I had while pregnant" sickness....LOL.

Overall I was lucky, out of 7 pregnancies, I only had one with "morning sickness". Or should I say, morning, noon and night and any time in between sickness. I had it 24 hours a day/7 days a week for the entire 35 weeks I was pregnant. My porcelain god and I become the best and worst of friends over those 35 weeks. A smell, thought, a lingering aroma from perfume and candles, in the beginning of my pregnancy, sent me dashing to kneel before the porcelain god. Heaven's, how I dreaded even starting each day. But through all the early illness, I did learn a few things to help ease it.

TO EASE MORNING SICKNESS

PRENATAL VITAMINS...should not be taken in the morning. They can irritate your stomach. Take them at night before bed. With taking them at night, they are less likely to cause an upset stomach and the vitamins absorb better into your system.

SLEEP...The less fatigued you are the less nausea you will have. Sleeping allows your body to relax and this includes your stomach.

AROMAS...avoid strong smelling foods such as garlic and fish. Strong aromas cause more saliva secretions. This will cause nausea.

MEALS...instead of eating three meals a day, trying eating five to six smaller meals. A less full stomach is less likely to become sick.

MINTS...try sucking on peppermint, spearmint or wintergreen hard candy during the day. Mint is a natural stomach soother.

GINGER... a light herbal tea made with ginger, gingersnap cookies, or gingerroot capsules work on keeping nausea down. It's a natural product so the capsules won't harm your baby.

SODA...flat 7-up, sprite, or slice at room temperature will help settle a stomach.

BEFORE BEDTIME...eat peanut butter on crackers or bread. I was told by my doctor that high protein foods before bedtime bring your sugar levels down through the night. It does work.

BEFORE YOU GET OUT OF BED...eat salted cracker(SALTINES)before your feet touch the floor. This is a wives tale but it does help from becoming ill first thing in the morning.

With any luck one or more of these things should help bring a little relief to your morning sickness. But please remember, if it is a sever case of morning sickness(that last non-stop for several days), call your doctor. Don't wait till your next appointment. Each time you become ill, you are losing vital nutrition for yourself and your precious baby.
