Tell your children how great they are

This subject is especially important to me. I had low self esteem for most of my life. I was sexually abused as a child and that can be very damaging to anybody.
When I was a child my parents did not praise me very often. When it came to school work, you either got an A or you were not trying hard enough. I did the best I could, but I was a C student my whole school life. I don't really remember my parents ever telling me I looked pretty. My mother and I are best friends now and my father is a wonderful father to my two year old sister and a wonderful grandfather to my two girls, but they were not very good at being parents while I was growing up.
My husbands mother was an alcoholic and very abusive while he was growing up so he did not have very high self esteem either. When I got pregnant we both decided we wanted our children to have a better life than either of us did.
I tell my daughters I love them every single day. I tell them how beautiful they both are. When my oldest daughter helps me clean the house I tell how much I appreciate it and that she is the best helper in the world. I tell her how proud I am of her.
My advice to parents is tell your children you are proud of them. Tell them how much you love them. Believe in them. If you think they are lying, don't call them a liar. Ask questions to get the truth out of them. People, especially children take things to heart. If you call them a liar that is what they are going to be. Don't ask your child to be truthful with you and then punish them when they tell you the truth. Why would they want to tell you anything again if they are afraid of being punished. Don't yell at them!!! You do not have to yell at a child to let them know that you are disappointed in them. When my daughter makes me angry, I send her to her room so that I can calm down. Then I go talk to her and tell her how what she did upset me and why. Spend time with your children. You are the one person in the child's life that they need the most.
High self esteem is very important, it can help you get ahead in life. If you believe in yourself and love yourself others will too. And if they don't, remember that is their problem not yours. You can't please everybody all the time!
