.. And No! I'm Not Done Having Kids Yet..

May 18 '00

I have never written an opinion in this category because until recently I didn't think that a family of 6 was large. I'm not sure how many kids it would take for me to feel that way, but 4 children was not a lot. But this weekend made me change the way I see society sees my family. We went to go away . . a nice Mothers Day weekend. . and called the hotel to make reservations. I couldn't believe it when the hotel said that we couldn't all stay in the same room! We are a family for goodness sakes! Not combined, not kids having a party, but a whole family. I wondered who they wanted to sleep in the second room . .my 6 month old or my 3 year old. . . maybe the 4 and 6 year old could bunk together. Unbelievable that the reason we go away is to actually spend more time together.. so here they were asking us to split up??

My husband and I are pretty easy going, so when people ask about the kids we smile and take it in stride. . .yes, they are all ours and no . .we are not done our family yet. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure one more will finish my family. It will always be a work in progress. We may adopt somewhere down the road, we will have others added when ours get married, and you never know how many others will actually be born. I'm never offended when people ask about the kids. We try to have a sense of humor about it. When people refer to our sex lives (pointing to the children and saying how busy we must be) I jokingly answer that we only have sex once a year and that we just get lucky each time. Most often we are complimented on the children when we are out. It's the greatest compliment to hear how I remind someone of themselves when they were younger.

Why did we want "so many" kids? Each one of my kids has a best friend, more than one best friend ..depending on the day. They each have at least one brother and one sister. They quickly learned how to share and take turns. They teach each other things that I never could. They each have their own beds but prefer to sleep on the floor, in one big sleeping bag. I know this will end one day when independence and privacy are of the utmost importance, but for now, it's working.

I do 2-4 loads of laundry a day and as many loads of dishes. I cook almost 2 pounds of meat a day now and don't know what I'll do when I have to cook for only 2 again. I wipe the tile floors at least twice a day and vacuum everyday as well.

It's not a wonder that I think of what I'll do with my time once they're all in school. I look down the road a few years and am already anxious. I think of how lonely I'll be and ponder what'll I do with my time?

Yes, I think I will have more children.
