Eating at our house...May 17, 2000 Write an essay on this topic.I have three kids. They all have favorite foods and they all have foods they dislike. However, unless I plan to spend the entire day in the kitchen I will never satisfy everyone in one meal. At dinner time at my house I cook dinner and the kids set the table. I put the food on the table, if they dont eat it then they go hungry. PERIOD. I refuse to cook three or four different items. I know my kids are not starving and I figure if they are hungry they will eat. It is that simple. On the table with dinner there is always cottage cheese and bread and butter. My kids will eat bread and butter. I make sure it is on the table. If they choose not to eat the entre then they can have bread and butter anyway. I know people who worry that their kids are not eating, they try four or five different things every meal to try to coax the kid into eating. I think that is way too much. The child learns to manipulate and the parents are frustrated. From day one if my children did not eat the first thing I put in front of them, I knew they were not going to eat and I was not going to fight it. So they have all learned to eat a variety of things. I do not play the no desert game I do not play games at all. It is simple, eat or dont eat. We do make sure though, if you are not planning to eat they still have to sit at the table with the family. Dinner time is the time when we are all always going to be together. A time to regroup during the day. They participate in saying GRACE and they stay at the table until we are done. If they need to leave the table they need to excuse themselves. It is the rule, it is expected and my kids know it. My children will eat a variety of foods. If they are hungry they eat. If not then they do not eat. I provide nutritious snacks during the day and they do ok with those. This has worked for my family. |
