The Bottom Line Expensive isn't always better, you just have to know how to shop.
With my husband, Matthew, being the breadwinner of our household, and me being a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom) our money is limited to what is necessary to live on, food, shelter, and clothes. But I have always been good at saving money, so when I found out I was pregnant with our daughter, Jordan, last year I knew we would have a even tighter budget. I have found a way to get the clothes we need without going broke. A few miles from my house is an organization run by volunteers, mostly little old ladies from a church who love helping out their community. The organization is called The Lion's Club, and they run a donation of used clothes, toys, household items, and whatever else you want to get rid of. Most of the items come from people, who after having a garage sale, and don't sell everything. They don't want to store it until their next garage sale, so they give it to the Lion's Club. When you bring clothes, toys, etc in you don't get money from it, just the satisfaction of knowing someone else can use your no longer needed items. When my husband worked at Arby's Restaurant as one of the Managers, he had to wear dress shirts, or nice casual shirts. With him working around food, and cleaning the store at closing he can get dirty. The grease and dirt is hard to get out of his shirts and pants, so I went to Lion's Club to get some shirts for him there, each shirt is .50 cents each. So if it gets so dirty we can throw it away with out having had to pay $15.00 for a shirt at a department store. Every shirt I got him looks almost brand new. I love to wear sweaters a lot in the winter, and the selection they got is huge. I look through them to make sure there aren't any holes, if there are small ones I can fix it up like new. The sweaters are .50 each. I can buy jeans for $1.00. They have even have furniture brought in. I saw a 6-drawer dresser for $10.00, if I had a way to get it home I would have bought it for my daughter's room. The dresser looked brand new, but the people who brought it in were moving and getting rid of a lot of belongings. In the summer is the best time to find a good selection of baby clothes, after someone has a garage sale they bring in everything that wasn't sold. I go 2 times a week for baby clothes in the summer. They sell baby clothes for .25 cents for a one piece, and .50 cents for a two-piece outfit. I always walk away with 10 or 12 outfits every day I go in the summer. I found socks, bibs, stuffed animals, books, and shoes for her too. I recently bought a snowsuit she can wear this winter, looks brand new, for .75 cents. I bought Jordan cute baby Guess overalls, looks brand new for .50 cents. I think about half of her clothes she has came from Lion's Club. You can also find clothes, toys, and furniture in excellent condition, if not brand new at consignment shops for kids and babies. We have a Cribs to Bibs, and Once Upon A Child here in my area. I bought clothes, toys, and other baby must haves at low prices. I got Jordan 5 bibs at .10 cents each, 2 outfits at .75 cents each. They have cribs, swings, and highchairs in excellent condition for around $10.00 to $20.00. When you take in your donations to these two places you get money for your donations. It's not much, but at least you know what you brought in will make another child happy. Garage sales are another great way to buy your kids clothes, and toys with out going broke. Every Saturday my mother, Jordan and I go garage saling for more baby items. We always go to areas we know that are in our area. To save time, always bring a newspaper with you and circle the prospective sales, before making any stops. Most garage sales start at 9am in the morning so we head out around 8:30 so we can get the best selection on baby items. When buying baby items at consignment shops, garage sales or donation sites look at the clothes for stains, if they're not that bad you can always try to get them out at home with a stain remover. If there are missing buttons, snaps, or zippers, you can fix them at home if you know how. For toys make sure they don't have any holes were stuffing can come out and cause a possible choking hazard to little ones. If the toys have button eyes, make sure they are on securely, if not don't buy it, unless you can fix it. Before buying board games make sure all pieces are here. For furniture make sure the drawers open properly, and no chipped wood. You can always stain furniture to make it look like new. You don't need to be rich to give your kids the best. Just don't feel like you have to buy clothes, toys and baby furniture at expensive stores, when you can find wonder things at garage sales, consignment shops, and donation sites in excellent condition for a lower price. |
