Here comes cat #3.

Oct 04 '00

When my husband and I first got married he was definitely not a cat person. He had his beloved dog and that seemed enough for him. I, on the other hand, came from a family that always had a dog and several cats at one time.

Over the next six years we eventually adopted a couple of cats of our own. Then in December of 1998, I came home to a big surprise. We do not live in a big house, we already had two cats and a good sized dog, and I was pregnant with our first child. So you can imagine my surprise when I came home from work one day to find an all white cat in the spare, soon to be baby's, bedroom.

Someone had brought this stray cat into work with them hoping to find him a home. The cat had been living under the coworker's apartment building with his sister. People would occasionally feed the cats but no one took them in. One night it got so cold that the little female froze to death and when the coworker found the little male his paws were frozen. It still makes me sad to think of how our new cats little sister died.

Well, my husband thought this cat would make a great Christmas present. (Which it did.) But I was still so surprised that he was letting me have another cat in our already crowded home.

We did take some precautions when we first received this cat, which we named Powder. We kept Powder in the separate bedroom away from the other animals until he went in for his first vet appointment. We didn't know for sure how healthy he was and did not want to take the chance of him spreading any diseases to the other pets.

We also decided since I was pregnant that I should refrain from picking up or petting Powder until we were sure he was healthy. I certainly did not want to put my baby in any harm. This was of course a really difficult task not to pick up the new cat.

Powder's first trip to the vet went great. Besides being hungry he was in good shape. Our vet advised that we introduced our new pet to the other pets slowly and with supervision. One of our other cats is also male and the two of them did not hit it off at all. In fact they still fight quite often but we hope this will change as Powder gets older. He was approximately 10 months old when we first got him so he still often acts like a kitten. There was no problem with the dog as she tended to just ignore the other cats anyway.

Bringing a new pet into your life is a wonderful experience. I do recommend however that before you let the animal mix with your already existing pets you take them in for a vet checkup. It is better to be safe than sorry. This is especially important if you are taking up a stray off the streets.
