"I'm Bored!"

How many times have you heard your child chant or shout this phrase to you? More than you can stand? Read on.
The first time we heard the words, “I’m bored” from our kids, they were in second and third grades. I happened to pick up a magazine in a doctor’s office one day and it dealt with this nagging problem. For those of you who don’t think it’s a problem, you’ll run yourself silly trying to buy your child everything they need to keep themselves entertained. Or, they will run you ragged taking them to the mall, amusement parks, or just to their friend’s house across town.
This is not what we intended to do. We wanted our children to exercise their creative talents and they had enough games, toys, bikes, books and extra curricular activities to keep them from being bored. Nonetheless, they find it necessary to inform you several times daily that “they’re bored” and expect you to come up with something to pacify them.
The article had a very simple solution and I never heard those words from my kids again. I heard it from their cousins and friends directing the phrase to their parents, but I didn’t have to hear it from my boys. What the author related was this, you must create a jobs jar. Take an old jar and fill it up with little slips of paper with various jobs written on them. On the side of the jar you put a label entitled “Jobs Jar” and every time your child says he/she is bored, you promptly have them pick a job from the jar. No excuses, once the words are out, the job is picked and done promptly.
You will be amazed how little you will hear those words. Eventually you will have help doing those jobs, you couldn’t get them to do before. It was funny to hear my boys relate to their friends how they are never bored and why. I don’t know of anyone else personally that has tried this, it takes courage to follow through and lots of parents don’t want to be bothered. For me it was the answer and it worked for us.
