The Pain Was Real, Even If The Fish Wasn't...
Jul 03 '00
For three months, I had a virtual pet screensaver. It was of a goldfish. I named him Marvin (After Marvin Gaye). I had to make sure I fed him at least once a week, and played with him (by clicking the mouse pointer on him to get him to do tricks) or he would die. Three days ago, after not having used my computer for the previous two weeks, my screensaver came up, and I was shocked to find an orange blob floating at the top of my monitor. Marvin had kicked the virtual bucket, and surprisingly enough, I felt bad about not having taken better care of him.
Oh sure, I could have just reinstalled the screensaver, and another goldfish would have come on to my screen. I could have even named him Marvin so as to try and forget all about my past neglect. But I knew it just wouldn't have been the same. It may have looked like the same fish, it may have been designed based on the same fish, in fact technically, it would have been the same fish...but it wouldn't have been Marvin.
Marvin Gaye has a song called "What's Going On." That's what I want to know. What was going on in my head during those two weeks? I know I didn't have to use the computer, but I still could have thought to turn it on at least once just to check up on my fish, on my pet, on my friend.
For any of you that have to deal with the loss of a virtual pet, let me tell you that although it ain't easy, your wounds will heal over time. You may be thinking now that there "Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Ain't No Valley Low Enough, Ain't No River Wide Enough, To Make Me Forget About You Babe," but overtime you will forget. You'll get a new screensaver, and get on with your life. That's what I am planning to do. I'm going to download a pornographic screensaver, because right now, in order to forget, I think I needs me some "Sexual Healing."
