More Than Gun Control
Mar 16 '00
I find it quite disturbing. Day after day seeing or hearing about another senseless act of violence against young people by young people. It has become almost routine. And just as routine is the politicians pointing their inept fingers in focus range for a photo opportunity following one of these tragedies. It is always the same, 'blame the NRA', 'blame the schools', 'blame the parents', blame anyone and everyone within sight except the one who should be blamed.
The government tells us if we have more gun control legislation on the books that would solve the problem. Does anyone really believe that gun control laws would have stopped the Columbine gunboys, or the Paduka boys? Sorry, they broke several existing gun control laws in performing their terroristic acts, what would one or two more have done? When one is contemplating mass murder a threat of minimal jail time for a misdemeanor violation isn't going to deter them. Though it is true we in America have more violent crime than countries with gun bans, the fact is if you discounted all the incidents involving guns we would still have more violent crime than those with stricker gun laws and bans. No, guns are not the problem, nor is more gun legislation the answer. These two items, problem and answer, lay much deeper in the realm of societal humanity.
The root of the problem is the simple fact that we in America simply do not value human life. That is appearant through the priorities we see so clearly exampled before us on a regular basis.... If someone "spikes" a tree to damage woodsmen's equipment (or possibly injuring or killing the woodsman himself) in an effort to save the rain forrest he is labeled a hero. Have someone hand out literature in front of the modern day death camps called abortion clinics and they are arrested, beaten, fined, and labeled a 'right wing extremist' by the local authorities and news media alike. Since 1973, the year abortion became a protected right, gun ownership in our country has gone down, but child abuse has gone up 800%. So, is it the gun that is the issue? Hardly. It is our absurd idea that a tree should be protected, and not a baby.
That's the problem. What is the answer? Simple, let your leadership know that you will not stand still any longer and watch the 1.6 million murders take place without causeing a change. November 7th is the day you can start taking the violence out of our country by replacing the blamers with those who value human life as much as you or I do. Once we begin to change our opinion on the value of a human life we will begin to see the violence that is so common place today become only a sad memory in the history of a once again great nation.
