Cartoons are really neat sometimes.
Case in point: Disney's TaleSpin, which is more-or-less based on the characters from another Disney flick, The Jungle Book. In the TV series, the main characters have been retro-modernized; they live in Cape Suzette, a 1940's era seaport town. Most of the familiar faces are here: Baloo is now a daredevil pilot; King Louie runs a zany bar and grill; and Shere Khan is a savvy corporate executive. They are joined by a few new characters: Kit Cloudkicker is Baloo's trusted right-hand kid; Rebecca Cunningham (voiced by Sally Strothers) owns the airline for which Baloo flies, Higher for Hire; Wildcat is the airline mechanic who's running a couple of quarts low. Don Karnage provides comic relief as the laughable air pirate. (Some characters didn't make it into the TV translation; there is no Mowgli to be found here.)
Even though the show is set in the days where comic books and radio shows were the highest forms of entertainment, it's still good for a laugh. The late Ed Gilbert was wonderful as the low-key but lovable Baloo with two "oo's." The theme song's pretty catchy, too.
