| george17's Full Review: Midland |
The Midland is about to embark on a major renovation, and not a moment too soon. But, if you go now, or in the near future, this review should be fairly accurate. You can add you own appropriate construction noise and debris.
The Midland has a few things going for it: good weekend deals, free breakfast, free cocktails, you can slip in and out without being bothered by solicitous staff.
But on the flip side: it's cheap on the weekends because it's waaaay out of the way. In the financial district a good long walk from anything you'd want to do on the weekend. During the week, I'm sure it's just fine, but I've only stayed here for weekends trips. Four times in all.
The breakfast may be free, but it can be a mad house with long lines for the buffet. And the cocktail hour has all the ambience of the waiting room at the Greyhound station. The nadir of my Midland experience had to have been the time I picked up my breakfast plate from the pile at the buffet, only to have it detach very slowly from the plate under it, by a big wad of chewing gum. Ewww. And the staff is so low key, that they routinely lose phone calls.
The rooms run the gamut from tiny closets to spacious modern rooms. I've stayed in the both, although I must admit that I only nabbed the palatial king room, with bath bigger than some of the other rooms, after complaining bitterly about the aforementioned gum and lost calls.
With all these negatives, why did I keep going back? I guess I'm just cheap. The rooms are clean. The breakfast is filling (and full of surprises!). Maybe I just felt sorry for them. And, hey, that free night in the Presidential Suite didn't hurt. Did I mention that it was New Year's Eve?
But, I hold out hope for the new incarnation of the Midland Hotel. If only they could change the location
