As a former Reno resident, I have visited Boomtown a lot over the past 10 years, both as the child and as the gambler. Hopefully I can give you a perspective on both.
First of all, this casino is located right off of Interstate 80, on your way to Sacramento. This makes it ideal for that last bite to eat when leaving town (or the first bite when arriving). The restaurant features good "truck stop" like food that tastes homecooked. Don't go for professional classy service, go for the fun personality of the staff. They are local guys and gals who will laugh and joke and serve your food hot and fresh. The prices are comparative to a coffee shop. You can bring your kids knowing there is something on the menu they will enjoy.
Speaking of kids, Boomtown has an excellent kids area, featuring "carnival" type games, golf, and a really neat motion theater. The shows at the theater feature themes such as roller coasters and mine shafts. The shows aren't for young children, the motion can be a little to aggressive at times. The games are typical "midway" type games that for the most part rip you off but you enjoy it the whole time. There are also video games available. Most of the games offer tickets to win which can then be redeemed for prizes. Of course, to get the really neat prizes you need to win a LOT of tickets - but again, that is typical.
As for the gambling, there are several table games to choose from as well as slots. Most of the tables are relatively low minimum bets, and I enjoyed talking with the dealers. I have always found the service to be good, even late at night. Drinks are well made and the cocktail waitresses are very friendly - as long as you are tipping them on a consistent basis, of course. (Rule one when gambling - no tip equals no service!) The slot department seems to be well organized with change people always available. There are not a lot of "big money" slots but a ton of the classic favorites.
Most of all, the casino offers a very relaxed atmosphere. There are not a lot of gimicks or bells and whistles, but an overwhelming amount of down-home hospitality. A good place to go to unwind after the emotional rollercoaster of the other casinos.
