| TiredMomof2's Full Review: Roanoker, The |
I'm sure every city has this kind of magazine, but here in southwestern Virginia, our magazine is The Roanoker. The Roanoker is a published every other month. The magazine depicts the lifestyles of most Southwest Virginians in a wonderful way.
The Roanoker is Virginia's longest running City magazine. It was first published in 1974 and has been going strong ever since.
Of course there are ads in the magazine. There has to be. But these ads aren't as annoying as the ones you might find in Cosmo or Elle or some other magazine. These are ads of things right outside your door. I have found these ads to be helpful when choosing a doctor, movie theater or a new place to order a pizza.
There are several different sections of The Roanoker:
Letters: Most every magazine or newspaper has them. I always read them in The Roanoker as opposed to some other magazine, because chances are I know the person that is writing it. And more often than not, what is being comment on is something that affects me too.
At Leisure: This is a one page article normally that goes into detail on something that the average Roanoker hasn't encountered. It might be the local delicatessen on the corner that never looks very busy. I normally try to check out what ever is featured in this article. Obviously if it's worth writing about, it must be special.
Conspectus: These are the local happenings around town for the month. I can't tell you how many times I have wanted something to do and picked up The Roanoker and within a few minutes, had my whole month of activities planned.
Around Town: Here they list the comings and goings in Roanoke.
On the Town Dining: Want to try a new place for dinner? Try here and you'll be sure to find somewhere you will want to go!
Features: Several stories on area residents and businesses. They are always well written and keep your interest.
They put out an Almanac every year. It's similar to a yearbook. It tells you the best and worst of the year and of years past. It's always fun to see who was voted the Sexiest Male TV announcer. (It's normally always a co-worker of mine!) and it's nice to see where other people won't eat and where they will.
All in all I recommend this magazine for all residents of Southwest Virginia and to the passersby as well. They will definitely get a better feeling of what Roanoke is all about from this publication!
