OdellBurgess's Full Review: New Yorker The Magazine
I run to my mailbox every Tuesday in anticipation of the New Yorker -- a dazzling combination of politics, movie reviews, theater notes, book commentary and great fiction. There have been weeks when I was disappointed, but very few, in my 3 years of reading the weekly magazine.
I know that people can quibble as to when the New Yorker was at its height of glory, but after 75 years, the magazine has managed to pull together the best group of short stories known to man, as well as write insightful columns about the current state of the world. I appreciate the hard news, of which there's not an awful lot (but that's what newspapers are for!), but I appreciate the obscure pieces even more...the articles about things I never would have even known existed if not for the pages that the New Yorker provided for me.
The book reviews are always right on, and I am always rushing out to see any film the critics actually recommend. The coverage of new and classical recordings, as well as the detailed performance schedule for NYC venues is a lifesaver, even for those of us who are only occasional tourists.
Finally, I adore the column space that the magazine devotes to drama and dance. Though it's not every week, I keep my fingers crossed every time I open the cover that there will be another descriptive and analytical review of current performances!
